Let's Eat

One of the most memorable meals I've ever enjoyed was savored after almost one hundred miles of hiking through backcountry.

I spent the Summer of 1999 in Yellowstone National Park. The school year before that was spent searching websites and talking with experienced explorers in forums. I met a great friend from Kansas who seemed to have the same passion for hiking. We were both scheduled to work at Canyon Village in the Cafeteria. We both wanted to log all the miles possible while we lived and worked in Wonderland.

So each weekend we packed our bags and headed down the trail. Sunsets, sunrises, rain, snow, heat and wind. Bison, bear, elk, moose, coyotes and bighorn sheep. We saw it all. Quite the experience.

By the end of our time together, we each racked up over one hundred miles hiked. So we followed a tradition formed that season, and headed to the now defunct Hamilton Store. We sat at the lunch counter. We ordered BBQ pork sandwiches slathered with extra sauce. And we topped it off with a tall, ice cold Rootbeer Float with extra rootbeer on the side. Let's eat!
